ETF – WEEK

The Weekly World Equity Income UCITS ETF is a brand-new type of fund on the European market.

What makes it unique is the frequency of its dividend payouts to shareholders. Instead of distributing cash once a year or once a quarter—as some stocks and funds do—it deposits money into your account every week. That amounts to a total of 52 payouts over the course of a year.

The fund holds a broad basket of stable stocks from around the world. However, standard stock dividends alone aren’t enough to fund such frequent, substantial payouts. To bridge the gap, the managers employ a clever technique known as “covered calls.” It works somewhat like the fund insuring its shares or leasing the right to other investors to buy those shares at a set price in the future. In exchange, the fund receives an upfront fee, known as a premium. It is these fees—combined with standard dividends—that allow the fund to generate enough cash to make weekly payouts to you.

Experts estimate the annual dividend yield could land around eight percent, though the exact figure will fluctuate depending on market conditions.

However, there is no such thing as a free lunch in the financial world, and this strategy comes with a distinct downside. When the stock market surges, this fund won’t keep pace entirely. Because the right to sell the shares at a specific price has already been committed, the fund misses out on the biggest gains during major market rallies. You are essentially trading the chance for maximum capital appreciation for secure, recurring cash in hand right now. And since most investors think in the short term, that makes sense.

In short, this is an exciting fund if you love cash flow and want to see money rolling in every week—provided you realize you’re buying it for the dividends, not for explosive capital gains. Don’t expect returns exceeding those of a standard global index fund.

So, will it prove more attractive than the Montrose Global Monthly Dividend MSCI World UCITS ETF, specifically because of the weekly payouts? Otherwise, they are quite similar.
